The Torchbearers are coming to town

If you want to take part in the only Welsh project to be selected as part of the London Festival 2012, now is your opportunity. As the New Year begins, rehearsals for Torchbearers are also due to commence. We are looking for musicians to join our fantastic Musical Ensemble and our Community Choir. We are also looking for anyone who feels that they would have something to offer the project.
Valleys Kids are spearheading a major arts project, Mzansi Cymru, linking people from disadvantaged communities of the Welsh Valleys with those of Townships in Cape Town. It will culminate in a joint spectacular performance of ‘Torchbearers’ in The Donald Gordon Theatre, at The Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff on the 20th & 21st of July 2012.
In the run up to Christmas shoppers were stopped in their tracks at The Wales Millennium Centre by a flash mob which brought the project to life through a performance of Men of Harlech followed by a crowd of energetic dancers and break dancers. The project has already engaged with over 2,452 individuals over the last two and a half years, in performances, workshops and showcases. The final number of people to be involved in the journey however, is likely to exceed 3,000. In a letter of support from The Archbishop Desmond M Tutu, his words have helped drive the project forward:
“It is not what lies beneath the earth that makes a country rich, it is the children who live on the earth, our gold and diamonds, that make a country rich…I look forward to the time when your children will link with us: Welsh gold and African diamonds.”
Our African diamonds include Zip Zap Circus, Dance for All, Fezeka Choir and percussionists Amanpondo. Here in South Wales our Welsh gold includes Valleys Kids ArtWorks Youth Theatre, our Community Choir, Coleg Morgannwg Performing Arts students, Rhondda Cynon Taff Community Arts Dance Groups, Elemental Force Break-Dancing, Zumba participants, Organised Kaos Youth Circus and there’s still room for more!
